WHAT DO
AVIATION PUBLICATIONS SAY?
PIPERS MAGAZINE
Taking Away That Chill,
February 2002
About Oil Sump only
heaters:
"However, heating just the
oil sump for long periods of time can be damaging,
The problem lies in condensation....leaving only an
oil sump heater plugged in for extended periods of
time can lead to premature cylinder and cam shaft
wear".
When to preheat:
"-Preheat below 20 degrees
Fahrenheit to prevent engine damage at startup -
Preheat below 40 degrees Fahrenheit to make
starting easier - Preheat below 60 degrees
Fahrenheit to reduce engine stress, cylinder wear
and "run up" time.
Why to preheat:
"...proper engine preheating
is critical to the long-term health of your
aircraft."
NORTHERN
PILOT
Hot Preheaters,
February/March 2000
Why to preheat:
"...an attempted start or
propping with insufficient case and cylinder
temperatures will result in the most undesirable
side effect: real engine damage -- real
quick."

Pad, Plug or Flame thrower?
March 2001
What system:
"Cylinder heat and a sump pad
is the best."
About Oil Sump only
heaters:
"Our instruments indicated
the jugs were uniformly between 30 and 32 degrees
for a rise of 5 to 7 degrees above ambient, Not
much help...?
About heating
speed:
"For Artic conditions or
hurry-and-go preheats, the Tanis products --
especially the Super Systems are better
choice."
"So if you're in a hurry and
can't let the heater soak the engine, it makes
sense to apply heat from the top down."
About external
heaters:
"The worry over cylinder
damage is that when the hot flame front hits the
aluminum piston, the piston expands much more
rapidly than the surrounding
cylinder..."

Engine On-Board
Pre-Heaters, Research Report,
January 2002
About Sump only
heaters
"Generally speaking when it
comes to aircraft engines, a oil or sump heater
element alone isn't enough unless the OAT's are not
much below freezing..."
"Is pre-heat a necessary with
today's modern multi-viscosity oils?...we feel
yes."
About the systems to
use:
"The more you know about the
ills of cold weather operation, the more on-board
engine pre-heaters like the Tanis....look
good."
